MBN logo
Minnesota's own Birth resource & information network
An organization created for parents, birth groups & individuals to assist in finding the beneficial pregnancy and birth services in Minnesota by looking in one place.

Minnesota Birth Network was also created:

To educate the state and promote a wellness model of maternity care that will emulate the midwifery model making maternity services safer & To connect the Minnesota groups, businesses, and professionals with this model to each other & to the parents seeking to make their birth safer, healthier, more spiritual, and their own.
OUR GOAL:
To introduce change agents to our city and state's birth network, raise our awareness of the benefits and options available within a midwifery model of care, and encourage them to include a midwifery model in their own classes and practice.

Database for informationThere you can find the complete, newest edition of "Effective Guide to Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth", which is the book version of the Cochrane Database (which is expensive to get). There you will find all the evidence (more than 30 years worth) on things like, why it's a good idea for women to eat in labor, etc.  The entire book is online and I use it as a resource for women whose careproviders are at odds with the evidence. Nothing like empowering a woman with solid, medical evidence.
:-)   It is FANTASTIC!!!!!

About Us
MinnesotaBirthNetwork.Com is run by supporters of a natural view of birth.
Listings are for your information. We do not make any implied recommendation of any provider. All providers list at will and are not required to present any qualifications in order to list their services. We will be requiring a small fee for all listees in order to maintain this wonderful site.

We encourage you to find as many choices in your area as you can. Interview several providers. If you are looking for a provider in your area and our search does not result in any matches, then look at the other providers as they may be able to further assist you in finding what you are looking for.

Did You Know?

-The U.S. ranks 25th internationally in infant mortality?
(National Center for Health Statistics, 1993)

- All the European countries with perinatal and infant mortality rates lower than that of the United States use midwives as the sole birth attendant for at least 70% percent of all births. (Suarez, S.H.; Midwifery is Not the Practice of Medicine, Yale Journal of Law and Feminism 5, 2 1993)

-From $13 billion to $20 billion a year a year could be saved in health care costs by developing midwifery care, demedicalizing childbirth, and encouraging breastfeeding. (Frank A. Oski MD, Professor and Director, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore)

-Midwives are the most cost effective and appropriate primary care givers for all childbearing women in all instances and in all settings. (World Health Organization Report on Health Promotion and Birth, 1986)

-Today, only 6% of U.S. births are attended by midwives.

For the Afternoon for Mom, we are now asking those who are coming to network or have a table to also bring a snack to share-this is getting bigger by the day-.  We are also asking you to pass on this postcard to anyone who might be itnerested in coming.
This is the big change.  Attendance is still free, BUT we are now asking people to bring a new or gently used book  on any of these topics:  natural family living, pregnancy, parenting, healthy eating/cookbooks for the growing family.  After the drawings at the end of the event, Healthy Beginnings and its community of support is going to donate to Maureen and the Parenting Oasis its first library of books.  How great is this?  Maureen is so excited!
I know I'm asking a lot:  gift certificates for products/services to me asap, book to donate and a snack to share if you're coming to share what you know; but I am grateful and so will all the moms who come to check us out!

midwives model text What is the "Midwifery Model of Care?"

"The Midwifery Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. The Midwifery Model of Care includes:

-monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle;

-providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support;

-minimizing technological interventions; and

-identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section."

(As published in the MANA News, July,1996 - Midwives Alliance of North America)

Midwives Alliance of North America, North American Registry of Midwives,  Midwifery Education Accreditation Council, and Citizens for Midwifery.
Why the Midwifery Model of Care?

At the core of this model of care is deep respect for the normalcy of birth and for the unique needs of each childbearing woman, attitudes that encourage  healthy births.

Maternal care providers who practice the Midwifery Model of Care have excellent outcomes while providing safe, individualized care.

What Is a Midwife?
Midwives are recognized throughout the world as the most appropriate maternity care provider for most women.  Midwifery licensure and scope of practice in the United states is regulated by individual state laws.  The following three categories of professional midwives are recognized in the US.

Direct-Entry Midwives
Direct-entry midwives, who are licensed in some states, are not required to become nurses before training to be midwives.  The Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council (MEAC) is currently accrediting direct-entry midwifery educational programs and apprenticeships in the US.  Direct-entry midwives legal status varies according to state, and they practice most often in birth centers and in homes.

Certified Professional Midwives
Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) may gain their midwifery education through a variety of routes.  They must have their midwifery skills and experience evaluated through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) certification process and pass the NARM Written examination and Skills Assessment.  The legal status of these nationally credentialled direct-entry midwives varies from state to state.  In some of the states where they are  also individually licensed, midwives services are reimbursable through Medicaid and private insurance carriers. In this state Midwives can be and have been Licensed. Look to the link to Midwives above for current news

Certified Nurse-Midwives
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are educated in both nursing and midwifery.  After attending an educational program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Council (ACC), they must pass the ACC examination and can be licensed in the individual states in which they practice.  Certified nurse midwives practice most often in hospitals and birth centers, but can attend home births.
