in infant mortality? - All the European countries with perinatal and infant mortality rates lower than that of the United States use midwives as the sole birth attendant for at least 70% percent of all births. (Suarez, S.H.; Midwifery is Not the Practice of Medicine, Yale Journal of Law and Feminism 5, 2 1993) -From $13 billion to $20 billion a year a year could be saved in health care costs by developing midwifery care, demedicalizing childbirth, and encouraging breastfeeding. (Frank A. Oski MD, Professor and Director, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore) -Midwives are the most cost effective and appropriate primary care givers for all childbearing women in all instances and in all settings. (World Health Organization Report on Health Promotion and Birth, 1986) -Today, only 6% of U.S. births are attended by midwives. |

We are also asking you to pass on this postcard to anyone who might be itnerested in coming. This is the big change. Attendance is still free, BUT we are now asking people to bring a new or gently used book on any of these topics: natural family living, pregnancy, parenting, healthy eating/cookbooks for the growing family. What
is the
"Midwifery Model of Care?"
"The Midwifery Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. The Midwifery Model of Care includes: -monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle; -providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support; -minimizing technological interventions; and -identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention. The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section." (As published in the MANA News, July,1996 - Midwives Alliance of North America) Midwives Alliance of North America, North
American Registry
of Midwives, Midwifery Education Accreditation Council, and
Citizens
for Midwifery. At the core of this model of care is deep respect for the normalcy of birth and for the unique needs of each childbearing woman, attitudes that encourage healthy births. Maternal care providers who practice the Midwifery Model of Care have excellent outcomes while providing safe, individualized care. |
